Between Valentine’s Day and Cadbury crispy eggs on the shelves at CVS (I can’t resist them!) I have dessert on the mind. In my world dessert means wedding cake and cake cutting songs.
I love wedding cake anyway it comes. Single tier, four tiers, naked or floral covered.
So let’s talk cake. Here is everything I know, including my favorite songs to play while you cut yours.
The cake tasting is always a highlight of planning. I suggest scheduling your tastings at the 6-month mark and firming up your decision at the 5-month mark.
My favorite cakes are the ones that feel like part of the overall design. The only rule of wedding cakes is that you have to share.
If you’re stressing about the budget know that I LOVE a small simple cake. You can always have a simple sheet cake in the back to serve guests.

Some couples dream of the cake cutting being a focal point of the celebration. The cake is rolled out onto the center of the dance floor and the band plays a sweet sweet tune. My top 10 cake cutting songs of the moment are:
If that doesn’t sound like you it’s more than fine to have a private cake cutting. Just clue your photographer in so they can capture the moment.
Chat with your venue or caterer about when they typically like to cut the cake. The timing will differ depending on when you plan to serve the cake.
If you serve the cake as a platted course following the entree you’ll likely cut the cake between salad and entree.
If you serve the cake as part of a dessert buffet then you’ll likely cut the cake when you’re done with your entrees. Planner Tip: As your guests are finishing their entrees I like to cue the cake cutting followed by parent dances and then you invite everyone to join you on the dance floor.
Couples get nervous about the actual cake cutting. I mean how often do you cut a three-tier cake?
Here’s a video that shows you how it’s done.
The key is to each put a hand on the cake knife as you slice into the bottom tier.
Some couples save the top tier of their wedding cake to freeze and enjoy on their one year anniversary. Personally, I worry about the food safety of it. You can always have your baker make a small cake for the anniversary that will be fresh and delicious!

The truth is I hated planning my own wedding. I felt like I was going it alone and was surprised by how hard it was to find partners who embraced my vision. Thankfully, the guy was worth it and that experience is what led me to become a wedding planner. After a decade of planning luxury weddings I am bringing my process to you.
